Horror fans rejoice: FX is renewing its vampire drama "The Strain" for a second season. The cable network announced the news today alongside news that 13 more episodes of the show have been ordered and are set to premiere next summer.

The supernatural show from Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and Carlton Cuse ranks as one of the most successful new shows of 2014 so far, sitting as the top new cable program for the young adult demographic.

"The Strain" is based on novels written by del Toro and Hogan, which follows a New York team of Centers for Disease Control researchers as they battle a deadly virus with ties to vamprism that may threaten humanity's existence.

"We've never had any doubts about 'The Strain,'" FX Networks chief John Landgraf said in a statement along with the announcement of season two. "Working with Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cuse and the brilliant cast led by Corey Stoll has been everything we had hoped it would be and more. It is thrilling when you have a show that is a creative and commercial hit, which is a rare accomplishment in this increasingly crowded marketplace. We look forward (to) having it on FX for as long as Carlton, Guillermo and Chuck Hogan need to tell this epic tale."

Del Toro directed the pilot episode for the show. His previous work includes "Pacific Rim," "Pan's Labriynth" and the upcoming horror film "Crimson Peak," starring Tom Hiddleston.

"Another season to spread the virus!" del Toro said in the statement. "Working with Carlton, Chuck and FX has been immensely rewarding and we have such sights to unveil in the upcoming episodes - the blood hits the fan on this one, mankind becomes an endangered species."

Landgraf previously said FX was committed to producing three to five seasons of the show.

The series is currently halfway through airing its first season, with season one set to release on DVD and Blu-Ray this holiday season on Dec. 2.
