Killer Instinct just landed on PCs running on Windows 10, courtesy of Microsoft's efforts for cross-platform integration.

The company announced that it made the free-to-play fighting game available through the Windows Store. Gamers who own both a Windows 10 PC and an Xbox One should know that in-game purchases and saved progress can be transferred between the console game and the computer title.

As a reminder, Microsoft previously pointed out that PC gamers do not need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play Windows Store games online.

For a smooth transition, only a few steps are necessary: start the Xbox One, and make sure you have the latest update. This will allow all progress and purchases to be shared between Microsoft's gaming systems.

The company notes that even though Xbox One fight stick controllers do not function on Windows 10 yet, a patch enabling them is expected to be released shortly. In theory, Xbox 360 Fight Sticks should be fine.

Keep in mind that if your PC works on older OS versions, such as Windows 8.1 or Windows 7, Killer Instinct Season 3 will not synchronize with your Xbox One game. The game is only available on the Windows Store, meaning that other PC stores (read: Steam) do not have it.

Since last year, Microsoft touted the introduction of cross-platform multiplayer, targeting titles such as Gigantic, Pinball FX2 and Fable Legends. So far, none of the three games sports the functionality, virtually making Killer Instinct Season 3 the first game to feature cross-platform integration.

Microsoft will soon release Quantum Break for Xbox One and Windows 10, and all customers who preordered the console version will receive a PC copy for no extra charge. It should be mentioned that game saves will also transfer between the two platforms.

Even though Killer Instinct is free for download, Microsoft will cash in via micro-transactions. By making in-game purchases, users may unlock separate Season 3 characters at $5 each. The company also offers bundles that can give you access to eight Season 3 characters for $20. Fighting games aficionados might want to invest $60 into the Supreme Edition, which basically opens up all characters, costumes, sets and perks and additional in-game currency.
