Getting a tattoo means you have a permanent piece of artwork that you will have to look at for the rest of your life. That means figuring out what to get may seem like the biggest decision of your life — or not.

There are people who already know exactly what type of image they want the artist to sketch up for them, or may even be talented enough to sketch something themselves. Then, there are those who have been dreaming of finally getting inked, only to have no idea of just what they want.

Either way, what you expect it to look like on your skin in your head may be way different from reality. You might think a tattoo will look good on a certain body part, only to see the finished product looks awkward there or too big.

Now, you can actually try on your next tattoo in real-time before heading over to your shop to get inked. Seriously, this could help save you from the pain of potentially having to set up a laser removal session to get rid of an ugly tat later on.

InkHunter uses augmented reality to let the user test out their next tattoo in real-time. The user can browse through a gallery of sketches to get some inspiration, or find an image that would be perfect for them. These include everything from phrases to flowers, skulls to stars.

Tap on the sketch you like the best, and the in-app camera will appear. The user is asked to draw a face on the place where they want the tattoo. Once the smile is detected, the user will see the tattoo on their skin and can take a photo to save and share how it looks.

InkHunter makes it easy to see how a tattoo will look in hard-to-see places, like the user's back or shoulder — if you have some help from a friend to help snap the photo. It can also help you decide whether or not that specific image looks good before you make the commitment.

If you aren't feeling the look of a particular sketch, you can swap it out for another one, as well as add filters to do things like lighten the ink. For each sketch selected, the user can pinch to make it smaller or bigger and rotate it to be facing the way they want.

While InkHunter provides some awesome sketches, the user has the ability to upload a photo from their camera roll if they see something online that they really want, or if you or your tattoo artist made a sketch.

All the tattoo photos captured in the app will save under a tab so that you can go back at any time to see what's the next tattoo on your list to get — and double-check that you still want it — or show it to your tattoo artist.

InkHunter was created by Oleksandra Rohachova and a team during a 48-hour hackathon back in July 2014. It already has 200,000 downloads, most of them coming from last month alone.

InkHunter is available to download for free for iOS, with Android and Windows Phone versions expected for release in the future.
