Nintendo has exciting news for mobile gamers: Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem are headed to smartphones, further expanding the company's mobile footprint.

Nintendo's very first mobile game, Miitomo, proved to be a whopping hit that quickly became widely popular. The game topped 1 million users in its first three days of availability, and went on to count more than four million users since.

With such great success of its first mobile game, it makes sense for Nintendo to plan an expansion and offer more titles. As such, the company just announced that it's launching two of its most-loved franchises on smartphones.

Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem will be Nintendo's next titles to hit mobile, but the company makes no mention on when that will happen.

For those unfamiliar with the titles, here's the deal. Animal Crossing is somewhat similar to Sims, but instead of human characters you get cute and cuddly anthropomorphic animals. Fire Emblem, meanwhile, allows gamers to control a bunch of fantasy characters and engage them in mini battles.

Both titles are entertaining and engaging, and both seem well-suited for mobile gaming. Neither of the titles requires very precise and fast movements, which means they can be easily handled on mobile touchscreens.

Considering that Nintendo doesn't just want to port existing games to smartphones, it will be interesting to see what unique experiences the two titles will bring to mobile users.

At the same time, Nintendo mentions both Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem as "apps" for mobile, not "games," but it remains to be seen whether it's just a choice of words or there's actually more to it.

No further details are available at this point, but Nintendo could offer more information at the upcoming E3 conference. The Wall Street Journal reports that Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem could hit mobile sometime this fall, but a more specific timeframe is unknown.
