Madonna the wise once said, "Music makes the people come together," and that is definitely the case for college students. Whether you put on some Beethoven to help you study or an impromptu dance party erupts in your dorm, music can help students from all walks of life bond during their pursuit of higher education.

But music is a bigger part of the college experience at some universities than others. Spotify found the schools that had the highest rates of students signing up for the music-streaming service's student deal last semester. The deal gave students a Spotify Premium subscription for half of its regular price. Then, Spotify ranked the schools where listeners played the most songs.

Spotify ranked the top 40 most musical schools in America, according to the schools where listeners played the most songs. Here's the first half of the rankings:

1. Arizona State University
2. Auburn University
3. Brigham Young University
4. California Polytechnic State University
5. Cornell University
6. Florida State University
7. Georgia Institute Of Technology
8. Indiana University Bloomington
9. Iowa State University
10. Miami University
11. Michigan State University
12. New York University
13. Northeastern University
14. Ohio State University
15. Pennsylvania State University
16. Purdue University
17. Texas A&M University
18. Texas Tech University
19. University Of Alabama
20. University Of Arizona

What's interesting about this list is that it's geographically diverse. The East Coast, South and Midwest are all represented. Music is the universal language, after all.

However, what is distinct about this list is that these universities are some of the biggest in the country. It's pretty obvious that more students enrolled in your college would lead to a greater number of students taking advantage of Spotify's deal and thus increase the stream of songs through the service.

Spotify also analyzed the music listening habits of students at each of these schools, including when they listen and the genres and artists they listen to. Apparently, NYU students' listening habits indicate that they get one hour's less sleep on average. The students at Iowa State listen to the happiest songs. And the University of Washington students listen to the longest, most instrumental music.

Across the board, 4 p.m. is the peak music listening time for students. That's probably because this is late afternoon when many of them are commuting, working out or possibly studying.
