Fans have long been waiting for more news on Sony's The Last Guardian. While it's officially slated to release later this year, so far details about the game, including a release date, are almost nonexistent.

That's finally beginning to change now, as the latest issue of Edge magazine has a few tantalizing bits of information revolving around the game's cat-bird creature Trico.

As reported by Gamesradar, it has been revealed that Trico, despite looking incredibly innocent, is actually much more powerful than it lets on. The creature can shoot blasts of lightning from its tail. This ability is linked to a mirror-shield item that the player character will pick up. Wherever the player points the mirror, Trico will send a blast of red electricity.

It seems Trico isn't so sweet as it first appeared. In addition to having a dangerous special ability, the creature can sometimes become angry. Trico's changing eye colors will tell players what mood the creature is currently in, with pink eyes representing anger. Trico's feathers will also stand on end if it's in a bad mood.

The Last Guardian director Fumito Ueda explains why exactly he gave Trico such a devastating ability in this excerpt from the magazine.

"There are several reasons why I explored this idea, but one of them is to make players understand the force and ferocity of Trico," he said. "I believe things are more attractive when there's a bit of oddness to them, rather than something being normal and appearing to be generally acceptable. The same thing can be said about Trico's appearance."

Aside from these new details, not much is actually known about The Last Guardian. We know it will involve puzzles, and that players will have to coordinate with Trico in order to overcome obstacles. Details outside of that, including what exactly the story is about, remain unknown.

After a long and troubled development history, it looks like The Last Guardian will be released sometime later this year. Here's hoping Sony announces an official release date at E3 next month.
