It appears HBO has chosen to rebuff its no flashback policy where Game of Thrones is concerned, because actor Charles Dance has confirmed that his character, Tywin Lannister, will be returning in season 5 of the hit TV show.

Tywin Lannister was a powerful man in his day and a great warrior as well. He was lord of Casterly Rock, Hand of the King and Warden of the West, but that didn't stop him from meeting a gruesome end by his own son, whom he had basically disowned and left for dead.

His death came in the final seconds of the ending of season 4, which caused many fans of the series to rejoice. However, he's coming back, and we have a feeling it all has to do with flashbacks.

In a recent interview with MTV in the promotion of his latest film, Dracula Untold, Charles Dance surprised the world when he said his Game of Thrones character, Tywin Lannister, will return in season 5.

"I'm not completely missing out on the next series," says Dance. "You haven't seen the last of Tywin Lannister."

Chances are; Dance will return in flashbacks since the books showed no signs of him returning. No one brought him back from the dead, so as it stands right now, flashbacks is the only idea that could work here unless the show creators are planning to shift away from following the storyline of the novels.

Interestingly enough, HBO once shot down the notion of ever doing flashback scenes in the series, and the cable network has stood firm by this belief. However, things might change since the show is catching up with the books, and probably the best way to slow things down, is to venture into the realm of flashbacks.

If this is the case, then we might actually get to see Tywin before his wife died, and before his son Jamie stabbed the mad king in the back. We might even get to see what led to the rise and fall of the Targaryen dynasty among other important things.

Fans probably won't be happy, but to keep the show from edging ahead of the books, this is probably the best solution.
