The Last Guardian is one of the most anticipated - and most delayed - games in history, but the wait seems to be coming to an end this fall.

One year ago, Sony showcased a trailer of the game at the E3 in a move that hyped up the gaming community. During this year's press conference, the company announced that the title will finally roll out on Oct. 25, with PlayStation 4 exclusivity.

As a reminder, The Last Guardian project was first promised at the E3 2009 as a PlayStation 3 exclusive title, after which a myriad of delays and a console generation shift followed. The initial game was designed to be a PlayStation 3 exclusive, but certain technical hiccups pushed the developing team into delivering the title directly to PS4.

Fumito Ueda, the legendary game director at Japan Studio, is in charge of the title. He notes that moving from one generation of consoles to the next was no easy feat for himself or his team.

Considering the long development period, it is a relief to both the game creators and fans to know that the title will officially come to fruition.

Sony also released a trailer for The Last Guardian during E3, and a few differences are clearly visible from previous videos.

The main story line is the same: Trico, as the flying dog from the trailer is named, is trapped with a boy inside a large maze/landscape of ruins. The duo must escape the ruins by exploring and solving various puzzles.

Whereas previous trailers showed only one flying beast, it now looks like there are two Tricos in the final release. It is too soon to tell if the second dog-bird is one of Trico's friends, an antagonist or a different being altogether, but the new apparition will keep gamers on their toes.

Another special mention goes to the enemies' aspect, as they seem to be utterly human. This is odd, considering Ueda's predisposition toward mythical enemies in previous games. Keep in mind that most gamers see The Last Guardian as the third part of a trilogy that contains the unanimously acclaimed Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Japan Games is the developing company behind the two titles, so the hype surrounding The Last Guardian makes sense.

The trailer of the upcoming PS4 title focuses on the emotional and intense relationship between Trico and the boy.

We'll probably know more about The Last Guardian before it arrives exclusively to the PlayStation 4 on Oct. 25. Meanwhile, check out the video trailer from E3 2016 to get a taste of the much anticipated fantasy game.
