Apple just announced the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, but the company also revealed other models in its iPad lineup at its event, which now have a starting price of $249.

It's no secret Apple is at a huge disadvantage when it comes to competing with Android in terms of market share. While Google can depend on the likes of Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, Asus, Lenovo, and many others, including Google itself with its Nexus series, to create devices running Android, Apple is solely dependent upon itself to push iOS. That's why it's more important than ever for the company to keep previous models of both iPhone and iPad in its lineup.

We've watched Apple move from releasing one new iPhone and iPad model typically per year to launching two new models of each. It ushered in both the fourth-generation iPad and iPad mini in 2012 and did the same to the iPhone last year when it released the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s.

This year Apple is already off to a great start of increasing its market share, with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus shattering sales records and being extremely hard to track down in stores. Last year's iPhone 5s is still selling extremely well and was the third-most-sold smartphone behind the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus at all four major U.S. carriers in September through early October.

Apple took the wraps off the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 at its Oct. 16 press event and the company also showed off its entire iPad family, which now has a starting price of $249 and is designed to attract even more consumers who don't want to spend the usual premium price for an Apple product.
