A recent report claims that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will have a face that is mostly made up of its screen, with the company looking to further expand the space taken up by the display in future smartphones.

According to Korean publication The Investor, Samsung display manufacturing unit principal engineer Park Won-sang said that the more than 90 percent of the front of the Galaxy S8 will be for the smartphone's screen.

In comparison, the average ratio of the display to the front of current smartphones in the market is around 80 percent. However, it is not known how the curved displays of Samsung, found in the edge models of its devices, will count toward the percentage.

Samsung's initiative for displays to take up as much space as possible on the face of smartphones does not end there though, as according to Park, the company is looking to increase the ratio to 99 percent over the coming years. This would mean that virtually the entire front of future Samsung smartphones will be covered by a display panel.

The goal of Samsung reflects the current trend of covering the front of smartphones with as much screen as possible. One great example of a recent device that follows the trend is the Xiaomi Mi Mix, which features a 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio. With the Galaxy S8 screen to take up more than 90 percent of its face, interested customers can already try conjuring up images of the upcoming device by looking at what the Xiaomi Mi Mix looks like.

In addition to Samsung's plans for the screen of the Galaxy S8 and future smartphone, Park also revealed a concept image of the Galaxy S7 edge, but with the home button missing on the lower part of the device. According to Park, the sensors for the smartphone in the concept image are placed under the edge-to-edge display, though it was not confirmed that Samsung would be doing so for the Galaxy S8.

Other rumors surrounding the Galaxy S8 include that there will be two models for the smartphone, both of which will feature curved displays. It is also said that the device will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 chipset in the U.S. and Samsung's proprietary Exynos chipset in other markets, along with an optical fingerprint scanner embedded in its display.

The Investor report also mentioned another researcher from Samsung's display unit that the company is working on a virtual reality device that can bend with a flexible OLED display, which will allow the device to completely cover the eyes of the wearer.
