Pop star Avril Lavigne has announced via her Instagram account that she will be releasing a new album in the coming year. The pop rock songstress has been taking an extended break to battle Lyme disease, which she was diagnosed with in 2015.

Avril's Extended Hiatus

Sadly, pop music lost some of its biggest stars in 2016, with the passings of Prince, David Bowie and, most recently, George Michael who died of heart failure on Christmas Day. With music fans looking to the new generation of pop superstars to carry the torch in 2017, there's some good news on the horizon in the form of a brand new album from Avril Lavigne.

The singer has been taking an extended break to focus on her battle with Lyme disease, which she announced she was suffering from back in 2015. Since then, Lavigne had pretty much disappeared from the music scene, except for one off a 2015 single to commemorate the Special Olympics, entitled "Fly." Lavigne's last full length album was her self-titled release in 2013, but the singer brought some Christmas joy to her many fans when she posted news that her next collection of songs would be released in the coming year.

New Avril Lavigne Album In 2017

"I'm really happy to announce that I am now working on new music and I will be releasing a new album in 2017. I can't wait to open up and share my heart with you! I'm excited for you guys to hear the new songs. It's going to be an amazing 2017!" the singer wrote.

Lavigne also thanked her fans for sticking by her during her battle with Lyme disease and pledged to incorporate her experiences fighting the ailment into her work.

"It hasn't just been a hard battle but it's also been enlightening and will reflect in my new music, artistry, life, and personally," she wrote.

There were no details given on what specific musical direction Lavigne's new work would take. The singer's last album featured collaborations with her then husband Chad Kroeger of Nickelback, as well as two songs produced by hitmaker Max Martin, who has worked recently with the likes of Taylor Swift and The Weeknd. That album was not a critical or commercial success when compared with her prior work, however, so Lavigne may choose to work with new producers and songwriters or perhaps reteam with former collaborators like The Matrix that helped make her an international superstar and one of the top-selling female artists worldwide.
