Google has released a software update for the Chromecast that will add support for 10 new apps.

Chromecast, the digital media streaming adapter developed by Google, was announced on July 24 this year. When connected to a Wi-Fi network, the Chromecast can stream audio/video content on a high-definition (HD) television. Users have to plug on the Chromecast to their television but the audio/video content that they want to stream on their television should be playing on Google Chrome web browser on their desktop or mobile device.

To get the software update, a user should have their Chromecast connected to the Wi-Fi. Chromecast has the ability to stream music, news, sports and other content from their mobile using web apps such as VEVO, BeyondPod, Viki, PostTV, Red Bull.TV, and more, to a Chromecast-connected television. Following the software update, users also get access to Avia, Plex and RealPlayer Cloud apps.

The Chromecast app also supports Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus and Google Play Movies as well as select content via the Chrome browser. However, Chromecast may not support Netflix and Hulu outside the U.S.

Chromecast, which is available from the Google Play store for only $35, is currently offered only in the U.S. Moreover, the company has not announced any plans to launch the device in any other country soon. However, in October this year, the Chromecast app started supporting countries outside the U.S. as well.

Even though Google is not officially selling the Chromecast outside the U.S., a previous report stated that Amazon is selling the gadget to various countries outside the U.S. including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the Netherlands.

Chromecast is not the only digital media streaming device available in the market and has competition from rivals such as PLAiR 2.

The Chromecast app works with Android, iOS, Chrome for Mac and Chrome for Windows. The company claims that it is also very easy to setup on any HTDV using a Wi-Fi network.

Google shares were up 0.02 percent at $1,084.89 on the NASDAQ during morning trading session on Wednesday.
