Riding on the success of its massively popular sci-fi FPS shooter Destiny, publisher Activision is aiming to repeat the feat with a planned sequel coming this fall 2017.

The plan was revealed in a recent earnings report by Activision, one of the biggest game publishers that spawned successful franchises such as Call of Duty. Destiny's developer Bungie will remain at the helm of the development.

Destiny is currently playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Increasing Global Reach

In a slide presentation of its earnings report, Activision revealed the 2017 release of Destiny 2.

Destiny was launched on Sept. 9, 2014 and it broke records with a whopping $500 million in sales on the first day. On Nov. 4 of that year, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg announced that the game reached 9.5 million players. As of May 5, 2016, the game is enjoying the support of 30 million players.

Destiny Expansions

Destiny released several expansions for additional content, game changes, and tweaks. On Dec. 9, 2014, The Dark Below was released as the first expansion. This content focused on the Hive race and the deity Crota.

On May 19, 2015, the second expansion, House of Wolves, was released. The focus this time was the Fallen race. Two multiplayer modes were added, namely "Prison of Elders" and "Trials of Osiris."

The third expansion The Taken King came out on Sept. 15, 2015 in time with the first anniversary of the game. The last expansion, Rise of Iron, marked Year 2 of Destiny, having been released on Sept. 20, 2016.

Full Sequel In The Works

This is not the first time that the news about the Destiny sequel broke out. Back in 2014, CEO Eric Hirshberg said that a sequel was in the works.

"Work has also begun on future expansion packs as well as on our next full game release. We're very pleased with the launch and continuing engagement," he said.

Not much information is known about the coming sequel. The original plan was a September 2016 release, but Bungie confirmed 2017 is the year. Hirshberg concurred when he said that a "big reveal" is being planned.

"I think that our team and our great partners at Bungie are doing a very nice job on two fronts," he said. "One, if you're one of the millions of players who's really invested in Destiny 1 and have put a lot of hours and passion into that game, you're going to love this game, and there's a lot more of what you love here."
