The Android 5.0 update on the second generation Moto G handset may come as a surprise to most Android users, particularly to users of Nexus who have been used to seeing their devices getting updates first. This means that the Moto G gets the upgrade ahead of Google's Nexus 5 and Nexus 7.

The new Android 5.0 Lollipop update is gearing for a rollout on Moto and Nexus devices. Even the LG G3 is scheduled to receive the update.

The Moto phones of Motorola are known to feature relatively clean, stock versions of Android. With this in mind, the official release includes the much-awaited Material Design UI, multi-user support, lock screen notifications, and the battery life enhancements dubbed Project Volta.

The rollout has already arrived in some unlocked devices in the U.S. and is reported to have a size of 386.7MB.

There are at least two methods to know or confirm if one's device has received the update. One is by getting a notification that an OTA update to Android 5.0 Lollipop is already available. The other method would require the user to check for the update manually. One can go to the Settings menu and click About phone then go to System updates. Either way, users would have to choose "Yes, I'm in" that would authorize the update to download. The last step would be to click "Install now."

Other Moto phones will also be getting the Lollipop update in the next couple of days. These include the Moto X, Moto E, DROID Mini, DROID Maxx and DROID Ultra. DROID Turbo is not included in the list; its international edition, the Moto Maxx, is also not listed.

Additional features of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update include Smart Lock, revamped Motorola Assist, Ambient Display, redesigned multitasking, new interruptions and downtime settings, and a new flashlight option in the Quick settings. Furthermore, it's also bringing smarter Internet connections and enhanced performance by the new Android Runtime for an optimized app performance.

The global rollout of Android 5.0 Lollipop was already announced last week but had to be delayed until Nov. 12. Apparently, the device needs to address some bugs. It was later on speculated to be a Wi-Fi bug on the Nexus 5 device that drains the battery.
