Sony is said to be working on a next-generation PlayStation VR headset that could be wireless and support eye- and head-tracking.

Back in April, the company confirmed that the current-generation PSVR headset will be compatible with the upcoming PlayStation 5, but it didn't say anything about a new model in the cards. Some recent patent filings may have already revealed its plans, though.

New PSVR Headset

As reported earlier by Inverse, Sony has filed numerous patents and trademarks to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). They depicted prototypes and features of the potential new model of the headset and revealed some details.

For starters, it may be capable of tracking head and eye movements, as one patent application describes.

The specs of the PSVR have also been leaked, and going by them, the device can work wirelessly with a battery life of up to five hours. It'll also sport a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a 220-degree field of view. This model is said to cost $250 in the United States.

Possible Release Date

It's unclear when the new PSVR headset will start rolling out, but the consensus is around late 2020. While this isn't set in stone, this is believed to be the case, since Microsoft is reportedly eyeing a 2020 launch for its next Xbox console codenamed Scarlett.

Of course, patents aren't a guarantee that the technology described on them will materialize, but if nothing else, they more or less confirm that Sony is developing a next-generation PSVR headset.

As always, these pieces of info should be taken with a grain of salt. Nothing is official until Sony says anything, after all.

Another notable patent that the company has submitted involves an immersive viewing experience to watch eSports. Simply put, PSVR users may be able to watch matches as if they're really there.
