Attendees at the Frankfurt Motor Show will be in for a treat because BMW will be unveiling the VBX6, the world’s first and only vehicle to have a Vantablack VBx2 coating, a black so dark it is being described as the world’s “blackest black.”

With the special Vantablack coating, some of the BMW X6’s trademark features will be hidden, thereby highlighting its other defining features. In fact, designer of the X6, Hussein Al Attar, even shared that they internally call the VBX6 “The Beast” because of how the Vantablack coating made the vehicle particularly menacing.

Naturally, with the intense blackness of Vantablack that alters the viewers’ 3D perception of the vehicle, the VBX6 is a one-off that adds to the list of things that have been made completely different and unique by Vantablack.

Vantablack coatings are said to be the darkest in the world. It absorbs 99 percent of visible light and nearly completely removes all reflections. Surfaces that are coated with Vantablack appear to lose its defining features, and look to the human eye as if they are merely two-dimensional.

Since 2018, Surrey Nano Systems and Levitation 29 have created several firsts with Vantablack such as a blackout house for Call of Duty and a 40-foot Vantablack monolith at Coachella.

“The first Vantablack car is certainly a big tick in the box when it comes to dream projects and opens the way for even more large-scale concepts- like a stadium! To create the effect of infinite darkness on that scale would truly be spectacular,” said Benjamin Males of Levitation 29, one of the collaborators that brought the BMW VBX6 to life, along with BMW and Surrey Nano Systems who invented Vantablack.
