Even Mark Zuckerberg is in support of the cause to fight racial injustice.

The Facebook CEO is donating $10 million to "groups working on racial justice" in the United States, the chief executive posted Sunday night, May 31. It is amidst the court cases that the world's biggest social networking website is in because of its data deals.

According to a report on Business Insider, this pledge from Zuckerberg represents the entire Facebook team and its interests. The donation is part of the heightened campaign following a series of protests growing in the country after the death of African-American George Floyd in the hands of Minneapolis police officers.

The insights

Is Facebook trying to regain its lost image after the controversies surrounding its data deals? The New York Times reported a timeline of the criminal investigation into these deals, as they promote ethical business practices in the middle of setbacks and scandals.

Facebook is not alone is this investigation and court trials presented on television and on mainstream media. They join more than 150 other companies, including Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and more, that have deals with the social networking platform. The report said that Facebook already phased out many of these partnerships to abide by the law.

The pledge came in after controversies as well. The company's response to the incident was disliked by many, and one of them was Facebook's director of product management Jason Toff.

He wrote on Twitter, "I work at Facebook and I am not proud of how we're showing up. The majority of coworkers I've spoken to feel the same way. We are making our voices heard."

Mark Zuckerberg's statement

In his Facebook post, the 36-year-old CEO called for the country to come together in the fight for justice. He wrote, "I hope that as a country we can come together to understand all of the work that is still ahead and do what it takes to deliver justice -- not just for families and communities that are grieving now, but for everyone who carries the burden of inequality."

Facebook is part of the group of several other tech firms that have issued their messages of support to end the protests and fight against the injustices the country is facing.

Aside from the $10 million donations, Zuckerberg also revealed they are working together with civil rights groups and employees to mark out organizations that can utilize these resources immediately.

'The pain'

Zuckerberg continued, "The pain of the last week reminds us how far our country has to go to give every person the freedom to live with dignity and peace. It reminds us yet again that the violence Black people in America live with today is part of a long history of racism and injustice."

Calling out for everyone to "create change," he admitted that this amount may not be enough to eradicate racial injustice and racism totally. He said, "It needs sustained, long term effort."

This move from the Facebook CEO was lambasted by critics who said that it is inadequate. For instance, critic Anand Giridharadas said, "And so the giving back that he's doing isn't just a negligible contribution that won't really make much difference. It actually helps to make things worse, by buying his toxic business model a little more breathing room and political capital."

This $10 million donation is an added amount to an estimated $40 million that Zuckerberg has invested annually in groups fighting racial injustice.
