Volkswagen ID.4 Electric SUV Goes 250 Miles in a Single Charge: Worth It for $40,000?

The new Volkswagen ID.4 Electric SUV has just recently received its very official EPA-rated range and it has delivered its target 250 miles in just one single charge. This might not really be that impressive when it comes to overall efficiency, but it seems the VW ID.4 Electric SUV might just be playing it safe.

According to an article by Electrek, the company previously launched the VW ID.4 electric SUV back in September. The vehicle is actually quite important since this will be the German automaker's very first next generation electric vehicles built along with its new platform called MEB to be sold across the globe which includes the North American market.

The new EV is expected to cost $40,000 before its incentives over in the United States. The Volkswagen ID.4 Electric SUV is currently expected to be able to sell extremely well especially if it can deliver on its promised performance. Just as of recent, the test results have given evidence of its performance.

The EPA has just released its official rated range of the Volkswagen's two different versions of the new VW ID.4 electric SUV and it shows that the EV can deliver the 250 miles of range it previously promised. The range is said to be achieved on its 82 kWh battery that is also backed with a 77 kWh of reusable energy.

According to the official EPA, the new VW ID.4 will need 350 Wh in order for it to travel 1 mile on average. This is a little more than the known Ford Mustang Mach-E which is an electric SUV of certain comparable size that just recently also got its own EPA rating.

Currently, the VW ID.4 electric SUV is still a bit far from the efficiency that the Tesla Model Y is able to achieve, however, certain automakers approach the EPA ratings quite differently and while they still need to be able to achieve the rated range within a specific cycle test, they are also able to ask to lower the whole advertised range for them to be able to play it safe.

As of the moment, there is still a chance for the VW ID.4 to perform better in certain real-world driving but this still depends on the particular type of driving as well as its conditions. Volkswagen is currently expected to initially start its deliveries of the EV's "First Edition" model over the coming weeks.
