After a long 15 years of utilizing Intel-based processors for his powerful Linux-building powerhouse computers, Linus Torvalds has decided to switch to a new AMD Threadripper 3970x-based processor, the "frankenbox" for building what is known as the world's most important OS or operating system, Linux. A few months later, Torvalds stated that he is glad to make this move and even wrote that he is really happy along with AMD these days.

AMD over Intel?

It was noted that Torvalds is happy to switch to AMD in a statement written on the RealWorldTech forum. The story from ZDNet states that Trovalds explains in the discussion forum that he was able to get what was described as "back for the buck" when using the AMD processors.

What about Intel's known high-end Xeon CPUs? Torvalds actually said that he used to look towards the Xeon CPUs and he could never really make the actual math work out. The intel math was what he described as basically getting twice the CPU for what was actually five times the price. For his personal workstation, however, he ended up still using the Intel consumer CPUs.

As for AMD, however, the AMD Threadripper price is reportedly closer to "twice the price" in order to get "twice the CPU." It was then explained that although users will end up paying more for their accoutrements both MB and cooling, it is still pretty much in the line as well. So yes, it still ends up to actually being even more expensive, but if the whole CPU power is what the user needs, the expense is still pretty much in line with what the users are going to get.

Of course, AMD still has its own new server CPU line, the known Epyc processor family and, as the Torvalds admitted, people will have to pay more for the privilege, but at least the company, AMD, does not try to screw the users over and even limit their own non-server parts. Users will then be getting the ECC for Threadripper, and even the plain Ryzen as well, even if it is actually not necessarily known as "officially verified."

ECC memory chips

ECC stands for Error-correcting code memory and the ECC memory chips can actually detect when a particular memory error will happen. There has actually long been an assumption that the memory errors are still extremely uncommon. Torvalds, however, who knows quite a lot about memory, vehemently disagrees.

Torvalds then snarled that the modern DRAM is now so reliable that it still does not need ECC was always the popular bedtime story for the children that might have dropped their heads quite a lot of times. Torvalds then added that they have decades of other odd random kernel oopsies that still cannot be explained. Torvalds also said that they were likely due to the bad memory.
