Shelby SuperCars (SSC) revealed on Wednesday that their supercar now tops the world speed record at 282.9 mph. Its unmatchable speed comes with a whopping price of $1.9 million.

SSC Tuatara now leaps at the top

SSC's Tuatara coupe conducted a couple of test runs in Florida last week. On January 17, SSC made two opposite runs for an hour to test the effect of the wind on the car on the runway.

CBS News reported that the Tuatara has increased its base price from more than $1.6 million to more than $1.9 million after undergoing several upgrades.

The results came to fruition when the recorded maximum speed tipped at 279.7 mph in the first run and 286.1 mph in the second attempt. To verify Tuatara's milestone, Racelogic USA certified the company's accomplishment. It was found out that it suited with asset tracking devices.

The speed not only put them on the zenith of 'godly speed,' but also it surpassed the 277.87 mph record of Koenigsegg Agera RS in 2017.

Previously, the same supercar company produced an ultimate car that reached the speed of 331 mph last year. However, the verdict about its reaching speed was questioned by many car experts. They said that the data during the trial was inconsistent especially the camera angles, the helicopter's speed, and the passing landmarks at various intervals.

In a report by Daily Mail, the SSC Tuatara owner Dr. Larry Caplin, took 2.3 miles of the trial to land the best record. Compared to 2004 Karting champion Oliver Webb who raced for seven miles, Caplin's speed met a more spectacular finish.

"Good satellite signal did all the things they said they did, and the data matches up. It's as legit as it can be," AR Motorsports founder Eddie Nakato said.

Meanwhile, Jerod Shelby, the CEO of SSC, spoke that there could be a much better way to boost the car speed in the following months. He added that the car reached unbelievable speed because Caplin made use of the 'drag race' acceleration. In the said acceleration, the car is tweaked to full throttle to achieve a 40-to-50-second boost.

In October 2020, the split speed was recorded at 301.07 mph and 331.15 mph after traversing Pahrump in Nevada within seven miles. Months later, SSC's dream of producing the fastest car now rested in its palm.

Shelby's proposed re-runs took a long time before being launched, but their efforts paid off. Shelby was in doubt that it could be difficult to break, as what he told to the Robb Report.

The First Person who Bought Tuatara

The 1,750-horse-powered Tuatara was sold to its first customer who is Dr. Chaplin in February 2020. The creation of the hypercar is not an overnight duty. It took SSC 10 years to develop a formidable car that underwent extreme trials, conditioning, and mechanical improvements.

The Washington-based SSC was more than proud to hand its state-of-the-art product. Shelby said that it was quite a journey for the whole team.

The 52-year-old owner added that it was in September 2019, when the SSC North America finished its first car intended for a customer. Shelby narrated that it was a really exciting moment after seeing the whole details of their hard work, the Yaktri News reported.
