A worker charges the new Volkswagen ID.4 electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) at the VW factory on September 18, 2020 in Zwickau, Germany. Volkswagen will officially present the ID.4 towards the end of September. In addition, Volkswagen also produces the smaller ID.3 at the Zwickau plant. Both cars are meant to lead the company towards mass sales in the electric car market and provide it with strong competition against rival Tesla.

However, there's one thing they need to do first before they can benefit from this new service. Electrek reported that the car owners need to go to the dealership to get a software update to activate the company's latest over-the-air update capability.

Volkswagen's new service is similar to Tesla's offered capability. Elon Musk's company pioneered over-the-air software updates in the auto industry. Aside from this service, other car manufacturers decided to follow Tesla's EV technology, including General Motors, Ford, and other giant companies.

"Volkswagen is driving forward the digitalization of its products at pace and is transforming itself into a full-service provider of hardware, software, and services," said Ralf Brandstatter, Volkswagen's CEO, via Automotive World's latest report.

Aside from Volkswagen's enhanced software performance for the latest ID. models, it is also expected to offer new customization options and functions.

"This will ensure that all delivered ID. Models will be kept at the same software level as new cars throughout their entire life cycle. Over-the-Air updates will also be the new normal in cars in the future," said Thomas Ulbrich, Volkswagen's technical development board member.

Ulbrich added that the company's new service will keep ID.4 and ID.3 on the same software level when new VW cars arrive in the future.
