PlayStation 4 owners, here is a question for you: when was the last time you cleaned your console? If you have never cleaned your PS4, here is another question: do you know how to clean your PlayStation, to begin with?

People often either forget to clean their PS4s or just think their consoles do not need to be cleaned beyond a simple wipe with a towel or tissue paper. What does not cross the minds of many owners is that the cleanliness of your PS4 affects the longevity of your console. If you do not take care of it, the faster it just might break.

With that being said, how exactly do you properly clean your PlayStation 4?

How to Properly Clean the Outside of Your PlayStation 4

Let us start with the easiest part of the Sony PlayStation 4 unit to clean: its exterior. According to an article by Business Insider, what you will need to clean the outside of your PS4 properly is a dry microfiber cloth and a can of compressed air.

To clean the exterior of your PlayStation 4, all you have to do is to, first, blow all the dust off your console. This is where the can of compressed air comes in. Once all the dust has been blown off, wipe down the surface using the dry microfiber cloth.

An article by Lifewire also recommends using compressed air to clean the ports found around the console as well as the vents on the side. It is recommended that you use a toothbrush or a cotton swab to help you clean out the areas that are not easily accessible to the dry microfiber cloth.

How to Properly Clean the Inside of Your PlayStation 4

Cleaning the interior of your PlayStation 4 is where things get tricky. However, before you start dismantling your unit, there is something you should know and consider first.

According to the article by Lifewire, opening up your PS4 unit will void its warranty. If a warranty still covers your unit, it may be a wise idea just to leave it be. If not, and you feel confident enough to clean in on your own, you can give it a try, especially since the PlayStation 4 is a favorite of bugs.

To properly clean the inside of your PlayStation 4, the first thing you have to do is to gently lift the top cover off the unit, according to Lifewire. You can use a cloth to clean the cover.

Per Lifewire, the next thing you have to do is to "put your finger on the center of the fan to hold it in place, then apply compressed air in short spurts to blow dust out of the fan." Please note that you should not do this while the fan is spinning.

Once that is done, take a Phillips screwdriver to remove the black plastic covering that can be found towards the back of the unit. You may need other kinds of screwdrivers to do this depending on the unit that you have.

"Use the T8 or T9 Torx screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the metal plate under the plastic covering in place," says Lifewire once you have removed the back plastic covering. You can then remove all the remaining screws.

After that, lift the plate that covers your unit's fan and then use compressed air and a toothbrush to clean the interior. Air-dry the interior of your PS4 unit for 30 minutes before assembling your console once more.
