Black Friday is here once again and needless to say, everyone looks forward to one of the biggest shopping days of every year. But did you ever stop to wonder where this holiday shopping day got its name?

The answer to do will depend on who you ask because there are actually different versions of the origin of the Black Friday name. There's a version that is more widely accepted, but there are those that are believed by some people to be the actual origin.

Black Friday: Where Did It Get Its Name?

If the more commonly known story of where Black Friday got its name is the one you are after, an article by History says that story links the name to retailers.

According to History, "As the story goes, after an entire year of operating at a loss ('in the red') stores would supposedly earn a profit ('went into the black') on the day after Thanksgiving, because holiday shoppers blew so much money on discounted merchandise."

History notes that this version of the origin of the Black Friday name is inaccurate but widely accepted.

Another origin of the Black Friday name, according to History, was rooted in the United States gold market crash on September 24, 1869. Wall Street financiers Jay Gould and Jim Fisk "worked together to buy up as much as they could of the nation's gold, hoping to drive the price sky-high and sell it for astonishing profits," according to History.

The conspiracy unraveled on a Friday that month, which led to the market crash whose effect was felt for a very long time, according to HuffPost
