The PlayStation 4 has had its heyday as one of the world's most advanced game consoles. But now, it's experiencing some sort of renaissance with the PS5 still almost impossible to get. But is it still worth getting the last-gen console at all if you don't already own one?

In this article, you're going to know about reasons why you should and shouldn't get a PS4. Hopefully, it will help you make a better buying decision.

Why You SHOULD Get A PlayStation 4

The PS4 is still pretty capable, even almost nine years after its debut. If you still own one and it's working well enough, then you're good to go. But if you don't have it, then maybe these reasons should help you decide.

  • The PS5 is still hard to come by: Sony made sure that the PlayStation 5 is a massive upgrade from last gen. But all that powerful hardware is no use if you can't get your hands on it. As per PS4Home, getting a PS5 is all about luck these days.
  • The PS4 can still do things a PS5 can: As of late, there are only six games that you can only play on Sony's current-gen system, writes GamesRadar. Six. The rest are just PS4 titles that the PS5 can run via backward compatibility. Right now, it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy the new system when you know you can play most of the games on last-gen.
  • PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus: Sony's game subscription service might not be as robust as Xbox Game Pass, but they're still making the PS4 a very compelling purchase. You can stream almost any game you want from the PS2 all the way to PS4 titles with PSNow, while PS Plus gives you three free games every month (one of them a PS5 title, the other two for PS4). That's a good deal anywhere you look at it.

Why You SHOULD NOT Get A PS4

Now, onto the bad news. Sure, getting a PlayStation 4 is a good way to offset the current generation for the meantime. But here are two main reasons why the last-gen console is not that smart of a purchase, especially given the current market situation.

  • Used PS4s Are Actually EXPENSIVE: Go to eBay right now and see just how much a PS4 console goes for second-hand. As of this writing, you can expect to pay $250 to as much as $510 for a used unit. That pricing is insane, given that the hardware is already around nine years old now. But that's just how the market has gone. It's all about supply and demand. There's not a lot of PS5s in the wild, so the demand shifts to the old hardware, which jacks the prices up.
  • A brand-new PS4 is as hard to find as a PS5: Yes, you read that right: Sony is ramping up the production of brand-new PS4 consoles to address the shortage of PlayStation 5 units. However, most stores aren't really selling them, as per The Verge. This basically means that hunting for a brand-new PlayStation 4 is as difficult as tracking down a PS5, which doesn't really make sense.

If you own a PS4 console in this day and age, you have to feel good about holding onto your console for this long. But if you're looking to get one because you can't buy a PS5, consider these factors first to help you with your buying decision.
