Why an Appropriate Daybed Size is Important for your Child's Health

Daybeds are no longer a piece of furniture for the single lady in her first studio apartment or dorm room. Instead, daybeds are becoming a very popular piece of furniture, particularly for children and teens. They offer an opportunity to create a lounging area that doesn't make their friends feel like they are sitting on the bed.

Daybeds offer a lot of options and features that make them even more attractive for children and young teens. You can opt for one that houses a trundle bed underneath, or you can get one that uses that same space for built-in drawer storage. Or, you can go with a very simple day bed that serves its purpose without a lot of frills.

If your child wants a daybed of their own, you need to make sure that you get one of the appropriate size. Daybeds were once offered primarily in a standard twin size, with a twin trundle, if any. Because daybeds are now used by a much wider market, the designers have been forced to adapt the daybed to accommodate additional sizes.

Just as there is the right type of bed for your child, so too is there a right size. You can discover daybed sizes, but in general, you should choose a mattress size that is appropriate for your child's height. Any daybed you choose should give you the length measurement for the mattress so that you can make sure it is big enough.

If you want the daybed to last more than a few years, you should really look at getting a full size instead of a twin. The full-size bed gives them a bit more space as they get older so that you don't have to buy another bed unless they outgrow it.

Outgrowing a bed does happen, as humans are getting taller with every generation. Abraham Lincoln was considered a freakish giant at just six feet. If your teen seems headed in that upward direction, you should consider getting a queen bed instead.

A queen is going to be longer to accommodate a taller person. Better yet, this bed is one that will work for them as they move on to the next stage of their lives. A queen is the typical starter bed for most couples. And, of course, the more a young person can start out with the better.

Keep in mind that if you decide to get a daybed with a trundle you don't have to get a trundle of the same mattress size as the primary bed. It is generally easy enough to get a twin-sized trundle if that is all that will ever be needed. You can also look for daybeds that allow the trundle to come up and create a true double bed.

Although looking through daybed options can be fun to see and think about, the bottom line is that you probably don't need every feature, bell, and whistle available. Think carefully about the features that you will truly make use of, and get the best one for your child.
