"Assassin's Creed Valhalla" will be free to play this weekend, as Ubisoft is working hard to release its next major expansion, the "Dawn Of Ragnarok" DLC.

Eurogamer also reports that the free weekend (February 24-28) will come shortly after the release of Title Update 1.5.0, which will launch on February 22. Here is the official announcement from the "Assassin's Creed" Twitter page:

Free weekends are Ubisoft's way to keep promoting their big games, often doing it before the release of a major DLC. But this will be a different type of free weekend, as you won't get to keep the game forever. It's essentially another kind of limited-time free trial.

Nevertheless, the free weekend for "Assassin's Creed Valhalla" doesn't have any more details about itself or whatever Update 1.5.0 brings to the table. The major update, 1.4.2, brought a handful of new items like weapons and outfits, new store items, and fixes for missing HD textures, as reported by Ginx.tv.

It would be safe to assume that Update 1.5.0 will bring more or less the same improvements, which will prepare the game for the imminent release of the "Dawn Of Ragnarok" DLC. The size may also vary depending on the platform you play it on: normally, PC players get the biggest update compared to those on consoles.

"Dawn Of Ragnarok" is the latest major add-on content for "Valhalla," and will take players once again to the mythical realm of Norse mythology to play as Odin. Various outlets report that the expansion will feature around 40 hours of new gameplay, which Eurogamer's Tom Phillips calls an "ambitious if familiar remix" of what "Valhalla" is.

The expansion is crafted by the team which led the development of Templar spin-off "Assassins' Creed Rogue," which is based in Bulgaria. It is scheduled to launch on March 10th.

Charting The Success Of 'Assassin's Creed Valhalla'

While the game might not make fans out of long-time followers of the "Assassin's Creed" franchise, "Valhalla" has still proven itself to be one of Ubisoft's biggest money-makers in recent memory.

Launching way back in November 10th, 2020, "Valhalla" has now seen record sales for the franchise heralded by 1.8 million copies sold during its first week, as reported by The Gamer. Since then, it has seen multiple updates and major DLC expansions like "Wrath Of The Druids" and "Siege Of Paris," both of which were also massive successes in terms of daily average revenue per user.

Twitter user Daniel Ahmad posted that "Assassin's Creed Valhalla" is now Ubisoft's second-largest game in terms of profit generation, mainly due to how its DLCs and Premium Editions have sold:

With this kind of financial success, it's no wonder why Ubi wants to keep the game going almost two years after its initial launch-which is already way longer than the post-launch support for 2018's "Assassin's Creed Odyssey," It is also clear that they want to keep their calendar filled while they work on "Assassin's Creed Infinity," which is still years away from launch.
