Unlike other devices that have short-lived security updates, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will receive monthly updates despite being released four years ago. In fact, the tech giant has just rolled out monthly security updates for the model after it was initially removed from the company's monthly update cycle in 2021.

Samsung Releases Monthly Updates for the Galaxy Note 9

According to the story by Android Central, although the device was initially downgraded to receive updates quarterly in 2021, Samsung has decided to revert this decision. As of press time, Samsung has decided to provide monthly updates for the Note 9 instead of quarterly updates.

The publication stated that, theoretically, the four-year-old phone's Verizon variant was given a March 2022 security patch despite supposed to receive security updates every three months.

Galaxy Note 9 Verizon Variant Still Receives Updates

The change was initially spotted by DroidLife detailing how the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 still received monthly updates despite initial announcements. According to Verizon's software update page, it was revealed that the recent update is not the "first security update the device has received since switching to a quarterly cycle."

Despite supposedly only receiving updates "quarterly," the Galaxy Note 9 was able to receive patches in January and February respectively. The device got Samsung's official security updates dubbed "January 2022" and "February 2022" during the unscheduled period.

Will Other Variants Get Monthly Updates?

It is important to note that, per Android Central, the most recent update is only for the Galaxy Note 9's Verizon variant. There has not yet been confirmation as to whether non-Verizon Galaxy Note 9s will be receiving the newest update later on or on some other day.

The most recent update will hold the "build number QP1A.190711.020.N960USQS9FVC5." To add, the publication notes that it is not unlikely that the other versions will also be getting the exact same patch level soon.

Monthly Updates Focus Solely on Security

Aside from the recent March security update, the release reportedly did not include any significant functionality improvements. This could mean that the new updates would be purely for security purposes and that the Galaxy Note 9 might not receive any new updates that could improve its performance.

The article by Android Central still commended Samsung for deciding to push for monthly updates to one of its most popular units despite no longer having to do so.

Samsung Galaxy S22 vs Galaxy Note 9

The phone initially launched back in 2018 and although it is still used by some, its 12MP camera, which is capable of just 2160p,  is far in terms of performance and quality from the more recent units by the company.

For comparison, the newer Samsung Galaxy S22 has a 50MP camera (capable of 4320p) while using the newer Exynos 2200 chipset compared to the Exynos 9810 used in the Galaxy Note 9.
