Qualcomm's Nuvia ARM Chips are set to rival Apple silicon, and these will be available in devices in the later months of 2023, the company's CEO revealed earlier this week.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JANUARY 04: Qualcomm Inc. President and CEO Cristiano Amon speaks during the company's press event for CES 2022 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center on January 4, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In November 2021, Qualcomm already announced plans to establish the next-generation Arm-based System on Chips or SoCs - this will be built to challenge Apple's M-series chips, particularly for the PC market.

"Sustained Performance and Battery Life"

Qualcomm has designed the chips to elevate the "performance benchmark for Windows PCs," and the Nuvia team will also be responsible for developing them further. The company said that they would directly rival Apple's M-series chips, such as the M1M1 Max, and M1 Pro.

Qualcomm aims to lead the industry for "sustained performance and battery life."

Based on the company's latest earnings call this week, Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon stated that the Nuvia team was advancing near its goal of developing a significant leap for Arm processors.

Amon added that the first Nuvia-designed processor would be aiming for the "performance tier," and the Nuvia-powered Windows laptops are set to be accessible for customers in the later months of 2023.

The CEO also added that he was satisfied with the commercial and enterprise designs of Windows 11 systems that were powered around the newest Snapdragon 8CX Generation 3.

However, processors will still be sampled with device design partners in the second half of 2022. But performance leaks could very well surface by late 2022 or in the earlier months of 2023.

Late Timing?

The announced late release of Nuvia Arm core designed processors could indicate that Qualcomm has delayed its original Nuvia plans.

During the investor day presentation, which was held last November, the Chief of Technology said that SOC sampling partners should have started in August 2022, and the shipping of retail products would be set for 2023.

According to a report by PCWorld, in which they asked Qualcomm if the earning call was delayed, a representative of the company denied that there was any delay that occurred.

The representative said that the timing discussed by the Qualcomm CEO was still in line with the November investor day data and that "2023 refers to device launches," which will be on time but only "late 2023."

All About Nuvia

It is worth noting that Qualcomm acquired Nuvia back in January 2021. The company is a processor startup that was founded by former Apple engineers who wanted to develop Arm-based SoCs for servers.

A few months later, Qualcomm established an extensive update regarding its plan for Nuvia-powered technology SoCs, and it also publicly announced that it aims to address the always-connected PCs(ACPCs) market with a processor that could top the industry and compete with the Apple M1.

Qualcomm said that the Nuvia chips would serve as a first product for PC computing and are already discussed as Windows processors that are well-equipped to challenge the Apple M1 series. But by 2023, Apple could be on its way to M2 processor cycle.
