Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk confirmed that the car company is currently considering adopting Apple's AirPlay protocol to help improve the audio quality of the vehicles over its current Bluetooth connection.

Tesla to Adopt Apple's AirPlay

According to Electrek, Tesla's recent vehicles have been received well by critics and customers, especially the Model 3 and Model S.

The positive reviews over its sound quality are all thanks to the audio engineers from Bang & Olufsen and other audio manufacturing companies.

Musk talked about the improved audio of Tesla vehicles on Twitter after one of his followers pointed it out.

Musk added that Tesla's system is highly programmable, so they keep improving it through Over-the-Air or OTA codec updates.

Twitter Thread

Another Twitter user agreed with Musk's comment when they talked about the subject of improvements.

They pointed out that the automaker's sound system is impressive, but it is limited by the quality of the audio that can be transmitted through the system's Bluetooth when playing music via a smartphone.

The Twitter user then suggested that enabling AirPlay would provide lossless streaming. Musk then said that the solution would be discussed with Tesla's audio team, according to iMore.

What is Apple's AirPlay?

AirPlay is a communication suite developed by Apple. It allows two devices to stream wirelessly, and it uses a Wi-Fi connection instead of Bluetooth.

Since Tesla vehicles are equipped with Wi-Fi capability, AirPlay can be enabled. Musk added that Tesla has been reticent in adopting Apple software before, most famously over enabling the use of Apple CarPlay.

The Tesla CEO shared that Tesla owners have been asking for this service for a year, and the company discussed the possibility of adopting Apple CarPlay in the past, but they've decided to keep its customers in its own software ecosystem.

Tesla's Alternative to CarPlay

According to MacRumorsTesla owners can use Apple CarPlay in their vehicles, but only if they are willing to use a connected Raspberry Pi.

A Polish developer named Michal Gapinski successfully brought CarPlay into his Tesla Model 3 in early 2022.

After working on the project for six months, he released his first available alpha version of Tesla Android on Github for other car owners to download and use.

Gapinski's workaround involves using a Raspberry Pi with an LTE modem and a Wi-Fi access point. It should run an Android-based firmware and a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable and Ethernet cable.

As posted on YouTube, the in-car browser connects to the Raspberry Pi and displays the Apple CarPlay interface on the car's screen, where Apple Maps and Apple Music functions can be seen.

Tesla owners can confidently use the system while driving, and they can also be controlled with media buttons on the car's steering wheel.

Gapiński says the main objective of his project's release is usability. He wants the project to become popular in the Tesla community so that everyone can use it.
