Samsung LCD production now marks its official end. A recent report also claims its factories have already halted manufacturing the Liquid Crystal Displays.

While OLED has become ubiquitous these days, LCD remains widely available on cheaper phones, TVs, and other devices. On the other hand, OLED screens take over the latest flagship devices.

BERLIN - AUGUST 28: A man looks at large screen flat panel LCD television monitors at the Samsung stand ahead of the opening evening at the IFA consumer elctronics trade fair on August 28, 2008 in Berlin, Germany.

That said, Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, took a while before finally ending the production of its LCD screens.

Samsung LCD Production Ends

As per a news story by Tech Radar, a report from the South Korean outlet, Digitimes, claims that Samsung Display has stopped its LCD manufacturing.

In fact, the news outlet further claimed that some of the LCD factories have already made the big switch to next-generation displays like Quantum Dot OLED.

Digitimes also notes that Samsung Display plans to transfer its workers to produce QD-OLED screens - while also transforming its LCD factories to the next-gen display tech.

According to a recent report by GSM Arena, Samsung Display has planned to shut down its LCD business as early as 2020.

But what happened? Why is Samsung only ending the production of its LCD screens now?

It appears that the whole COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the previous plans of the South Korean tech giant.

LAS VEGAS - JANUARY 03: Trade Show Electrical electricians Willy Boyle (L) and Samantha Masten work on lighting above what Samsung advertises as the world's largest LCD television (82 inches wide) as preparations continue for the International Consumer Electronics Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center January 3, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

GSM Arena reports that Samsung had to put hold the scheduled end of its LCD business primarily due to the effects of the novel coronavirus.

Why does COVID-19 have to do with LCD screens? Samsung decided in 2020 to continue producing cheaper displays as the demand for more affordable devices skyrocketed during the height of the pandemic.

Not only were consumers looking for cheaper TVs within the confines of their homes. The demand for budget smartphones and tablets has also been at its peak when people were forced to stay most of their time at home to avoid contracting the virus.

So, instead of closing down its LCD factories as early as 2020. Samsung had to follow the emerging trend during the pandemic. As such, its manufacturing only ends now.

Samsung LCD Production End: Six Months Earlier?

But it looks like the shutdown of the LCD manufacturing of the South Korean tech giant is earlier than what Samsung announced in 2021.

Last year, Samsung Display already gave the public a heads up that it would stop producing LCD screens by the end of 2022.

However, we are still merely halfway through 2022, six months far from its final curtain call. Yet, Samsung Display has reportedly ended its LCD production.
