Tesla has just launched a home charging station compatible with all other types of electric cars. The charging station is called the Wall Connector and can work on other electric cars due to its design not being limited to just Tesla vehicles.

Tesla Connector Tried to be the New Standard but has Not been Successful

According to the story by Electrek, unlike other types of electric vehicle automakers, Tesla uses a special proprietary connector for vehicles produced within the North American market. This means the company can keep its charging network and products, like its home charger, strictly usable only by Tesla EVs.

There were efforts made earlier in the year to make the Tesla connector the new standard, but so far, they have not been successful. Due to this, Tesla has been leading towards making its charging network and products open to other types of electric vehicles.

CSS Connectors were Added to Supercharger Stations

The company has also shown indication that it would be adding the CCS connectors to Supercharger stations in North America. This move comes after they added the CSS connectors to European Supercharger stations.

In 2021, Tesla launched a new home charging station version for a brief period that contained something new. The Wall Connectors launched for this short period included a J1772 connector instead of its standard one.

Tesla New J1772 Wall Connector is being Sold for $550

The release of the new Wall Connector was targeted toward EVs that did not come from Tesla. However, the production of these home chargers did not let them stay available for a significant period and was only available shortly.

Tesla listed the new version of its home charging station, the J1772 Wall Connector, on its official website. As per its listing, the charging station will cost buyers $550 for the version that allows them to charge non-Tesla electric cars.

The New Tesla Wall Connector can be Used for Commercial Purposes

Based on the company's description, the automaker could be looking at taking over the commercial charging market. There was a segment directed to developers, managers, and real estate owners saying that should they be interested in bulk purchases, they would have to go to another segment of the website.

Tesla noted that purchasing over 12 J1772 Wall Connectors would have to go to the website's official Commercial Charging section. The article by Electrek notes that the price of the new home charging station can be considered competitive due to the addition of power-sharing and connectivity features.

Of course, Tesla owners can still use the station, but this time, they will need an adaptor for their vehicle to be compatible with the new home stations. Owners with no need to charge electric cars outside of Tesla vehicles can still buy the original Wall Connector which includes its original proprietary plug at $400.
