Twitter suffered a significant outage on Wednesday, Dec. 28, preventing users from accessing the popular social media platform. According to Downdetector, a website that tracks outages, the company received over 8,700 reports of problems with the site as of 7:30 am EST.

The outage occurred just two months after Elon Musk's $44bn takeover of Twitter, which has sparked controversy among users.

Twitter Is Down

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and one of the world's wealthiest individuals, has made significant changes to the platform since the acquisition. He has reduced the size of Twitter's workforce, implemented a paid subscriber service, and implemented controversial modifications to the platform's moderation policies.

As first reported by Aljazeera, many Twitter users took to other social media sites to express their frustration with the outage. Some speculated that the changes introduced by Musk caused the problems. In contrast, others blamed technical issues or cyber-attacks.

Users reported various problems, including messages indicating they exceeded their rate limit, the site being completely broken, or failing to fetch new tweets. On the desktop version of the site, some users couldn't log in to their accounts either because the site crashed or just refreshed without asking for login information.

The Verge reports that while the mobile app appeared to be functioning for some users, others also said issues with it. The outages differed in how bad they were and how long they lasted. Some users could only get on the site sometimes.

A few individuals have also reported being logged out of their accounts and unable to log back in. "I got signed out of Twitter on my PC, and now I cannot sign back in! #TwitterDown, "Someone tweeted about it. Many Twitter users have pleaded with Elon Musk to resolve the problems as quickly as possible.

No Official Statement Yet

The company has not yet released an official statement regarding the cause of the outage. In the meantime, users have been advised to check the Twitter Support account for updates on the situation.

The outage could significantly blow Twitter, which has over 330 million monthly active users. The platform has become a key source of information and communication worldwide.
