An employee passes the Google logo during the press tour before the festive opening of the Berlin representation of Google Germany on January 22, 2019 in Berlin, Germany. The official opening will take place tonight with Berlin Mayor Michael Mueller.

In his latest memo, the CEO said that affected employees are estimated to be around 12,000.

"I have some difficult news to share. We've decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles," said Pichai in his memo.

Google is just one of the tech firms that are terminating thousands of employees.

Recently, Amazon announced its biggest layoff, affecting over 18,000 workers.

Although mass layoffs are no longer new in the tech industry, Google's latest announcement is still sad news for its loyal staff.

New Google Mass Layoff Confirmed

According to CNBC's latest report, the 12,000 employees affected by Google's latest mass layoff cover 6% of the company's workforce.

Google employees walk off the job to protest the company's handling of sexual misconduct claims, on November 1, 2018, in Mountain View, California. Employees were seen staging walkouts at offices around the world after a report last week that Google gave $90 million in a severance package to Any Rubin and covered up details of his sexual misconduct allegations, which triggered his departure.

Pichai said that workers in the United States would be the first ones to be affected since terminations would apply immediately.

In other countries, the layoff processes would take longer because of their local laws and practices.

Google's CEO stated they had already sent separate emails to U.S.-based employees who would be terminated.

Reuters reported that Google is removing thousands of employees as its investments in AI intensify.

Pichai said that Google has a substantial opportunity since its products are integrated with artificial intelligence.

Google to Help Affected Employees

CEO Sundar Pichai said that they are grateful for the contributions of those who will be laid off.

He added that Google would help affected employees as they look for other opportunities. Here are the assistances that the giant tech firm will provide:

  • 2022 bonuses and remaining vacation time will be paid.
  • Six months of healthcare, job placement services, and immigration support will be offered.
  • Affected employees outside the United States who are in line with local practices will receive assistance.
  • A severance package starting at 16 weeks' salary plus two weeks for every additional year at Google and acceleration of at least 16 weeks of GSU vesting will be provided.
  • Employees will get paid during the full notification period (minimum of 60 days).

Aside from Google employees, staff from other tech firms are also facing job uncertainties and salary issues.

Recently, the Tanzania government reversed its 15% fee ceiling on e-hailing companies, preventing Uber and Bolt drivers from receiving salary increases.

We also reported that around 10,000 Microsoft employees are being terminated.
