Sony has recently announced the much-anticipated launch of their Access controller for the PlayStation 5, designed to enhance accessibility and cater to gamers with disabilities.

Being developed by Sony with the help of accessibility organizations and experts for the past five years, the Access Controller offers a versatile and customizable gaming experience, and it is now available for pre-order, with a global launch set for December 6.

A Closer Look at the Access Controller

The Access controller, previously known as Project Leonardo, was unveiled earlier this year at CES.

Sony has now provided detailed specifications and exciting features for this groundbreaking controller. Measuring approximately 141 x 39 x 191 mm and weighing around 322 grams, the Access controller offers a comfortable and ergonomic design.

One of the highlights of the Access controller is its customizability. With different buttons and stick caps in various shapes and designs, gamers can create their own unique layout.

Moreover, the controller supports operation from any 360° orientation, providing flexibility and convenience during gameplay.

More Accessibility Features

To further enhance accessibility, the Access controller features four industry-standard 3.5mm expansion ports.

These ports enable users to connect third-party accessibility accessories, such as specialty trigger switches or additional buttons, expanding the controller's functionality and adaptability.

In terms of software customization, the Access Controller offers an array of options. Users can map buttons to create up to 30 control profiles, ensuring optimal comfort and ease of use.

Stick settings can be adjusted, commands can be toggled on/off, and buttons can even be disabled to prevent accidental presses.

Eurogamer.net reports that the controller also comes with its own user interface (UI), allowing players to fine-tune settings directly on their PlayStation 5 console.

Collaborative Play

Collaborative play is another exciting aspect of the Access Controller. It can be paired with a DualSense wireless controller, allowing two Access controllers and one DualSense controller to function as a single virtual controller.

This feature fosters cooperative gaming experiences and enables friends and family to enjoy games together, regardless of their physical abilities.

Pricing and Availability

Priced at $89.99 USD/$119.99 CAD/¥12,980 JPY/€89.99/£79.99, the controller offers a competitive value considering its extensive features and customizability.

Pre-orders for the Access controller are now open, starting from July 21. Players in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Portugal can pre-order directly from PlayStation through their official website, direct.playstation.com, or from select retailers.

The global launch of the Access Controller is scheduled for December 6. Sony enthusiasts worldwide can look forward to this innovative accessory that enhances accessibility and opens up new gaming possibilities.

The company's strong collaboration with accessibility organizations and experts underscores their dedication to inclusivity, making gaming a joyous experience for all.
