Introducing Satellite SMS to Android 14

Satellite communication through smartphones is becoming a reality as some iPhones and certain Samsung and Pixel phones already support it. Its availability will reportedly expand once Android 14 is officially launched.

However, compatible hardware will be required to utilize this feature, and its implementation will depend on each phone manufacturer. Based on a tweet by the Pixel #TeamPixel, Android 14 is expected to introduce support for satellite SMS.

According to WCCF Tech, this will gradually become available first on compatible Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones. This should not be a surprise considering previous reports about the Galaxy S22 Ultra being used to make a satellite call.

The highly anticipated launch of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro is expected to take place in October, which means we might receive detailed information about how satellite connectivity will function on supported Pixel models in the coming months.

The final release of Android 14 is just around the corner, with an estimated two to three weeks remaining before its launch. The full scope of satellite support in smartphones remains uncertain, so it will be interesting to see how Android 14 will leverage this feature.

It's crucial to recognize that Android phones are diverse in their designs, particularly due to manufacturer variations. While Samsung holds a prominent position as a major player with significant influence, other companies may choose not to adopt the satellite feature, even though the latest version of Android supports it.

Satellite Connection Saving Lives

During the October release, it is plausible that some information regarding satellite connectivity on Android 14 will also be disclosed. Phone Arena reported that Apple's satellite connectivity feature had demonstrated its life-saving capabilities by aiding in rescuing individuals stranded in remote locations.

For instance, a man was rescued in Alaska, and two women were rescued in British Columbia. Accessing emergency help in areas without cellular service has proven crucial and can make the difference between life and death in various situations. Having this feature available on Android phones has the potential to save many lives as well.

This became possible as users can still activate Emergency SOS via satellite even if their iPhone lacks mobile data or signal. According to Apple, users will need to hold their phones naturally in their hands and avoid returning them to their pockets to initiate contact with emergency services.

People should ensure a clear view of the sky, as obstacles like trees with light foliage might impact the satellite connection. In case of any confusion, iPhones offer a comprehensive guide with step-by-step instructions that users can follow.
