'Baldur's Gate 3', the hit D&D role-playing game from Larian Studios, has stormed onto the gaming scene, shattering records and surpassing all expectations. The game's overwhelming success has astonished developers and players as it climbs to new heights on Steam.

Just a day after its release, Eurogamer.net reports that Baldur's Gate 3 made waves on Steam, garnering an impressive player peak of over 472,000 individuals, hinting at its potential for greatness.

Fast forward to today, and the numbers have only skyrocketed, with the game solidifying its position among Steam's elite. According to SteamDB, August 6 marked a milestone for Baldur's Gate 3, as it soared into Steam's top ten most played games, amassing a staggering 712,281 concurrent players, placing it at the ninth spot in concurrent player counts.

Dominating Steam

This remarkable feat puts Baldur's Gate 3 ahead of other popular titles, including Valheim, Goose Goose Duck, and the widely-adored Apex Legends.

But its journey to the top does not end there. As of now, Baldur's Gate 3 is currently ranked as the second-most played game of the last 24 hours, a commendable position for any game on the Steam platform.

Only the longstanding powerhouse, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), stands in its way. DOTA2 trails at third.

Developer Surprised

It appears that Larian Studios was unprepared for the overwhelming success of Baldur's Gate 3. Swen Vincke, the founder of Larian Studios, took to Twitter to express his surprise at the game's unexpected triumph.

Vincke revealed that the game had hit an astounding 500,000 concurrent players, soaring past initial expectations, which were capped at a mere 100,000 concurrents at best. As the numbers continued to grow, Baldur's Gate 3 left even more prominent titles like DOTA 2, Rust, Apex Legends, GTA 5, and PUBG in its wake.

It is important to note that Baldur's Gate 3's accomplishment is even more impressive considering its genre. The game is a single-player, hardcore RPG, a genre that has fallen out of favor with many publishers and developers.

Historic Numbers

Forbes notes that the game's unprecedented performance on Steam is further emphasized by its entry into the top 10 peak player counts in Steam history.

Currently holding the ninth position, Baldur's Gate 3 is inching ever closer to the record set by Hogwarts Legacy, which peaked at 879,308 concurrent players earlier this year.

The top spots are dominated by massive titles like New World, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, DOTA 2, Lost Ark, CS:GO, and PUBG, with only a handful of single-player games making their mark.

While it remains uncertain whether it will surpass its own achievements the following weekend, one thing is sure - Baldur's Gate 3 has already defied all expectations.

As for sales, exact figures for Baldur's Gate 3's PC-only release remain undisclosed. Nonetheless, the game's monumental triumph on Steam and the flood of positive reviews suggest it is well on its way to becoming a serious contender for Game of the Year.
