Like other technologies including cars and PCs, smartphones may last long if they see good maintenance and up-to-spec parts installed despite being repaired. This access to Pixel 8 parts will join the yearly update of the Pixel series, with Google offering this hardware for those who are not keen on upgrading their devices annually.

For now, Google has not announced the way to distribute these parts to the public.

Right to Repair and Google

The Right to Repair movement has changed the perspective of tech giants, as well as customers regarding the many fixes available for broken devices. It would no longer require users to bring it to authorized service providers, with Google announcing a significant partnership with iFixit last year, providing parts and guides for DIY repairs.

Google's list of available parts for its different devices is extensive, particularly as it provides the parts from the Pixel 2 up to the Pixel 6 Pro. It is important to note that these parts are genuine, and it is from Google as well, with the current and last gen smartphones, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series, also seeing availability on iFixit and other platforms.

The sweeping Right to Repair initiative has provided the country with significant access to parts that were initially gatekept by tech companies for a long time. Soon, Google's Pixel 8 will see the many parts needed for its repair, with the Mountain View giant promising as much as seven years of availability for Pixel 8's parts, one that would help the device last until the end of this decade.
