Family Tracks Stolen Car/Dog with AirTags

As first reported by AppleInsider, the story unfolds in Atlanta, where Sonya Reese and her son, Anthony, had placed two AirTags inside their car and one on the collar of their pet dog, Dior, a Shih Tzu Pomeranian mix. Little did they know that this precaution would soon become invaluable.

The ordeal began when Anthony Reese briefly entered a smoke shop, leaving their car with Dior inside. In a matter of moments, he returned to find their car missing. Panicked, Anthony promptly alerted the authorities, but a realization struck him - the car and their beloved pet were equipped with AirTags.

"I have two AirTags in the car, and one on the dog," Anthony explained, "As we are talking to the police, we can see that the AirTag was headed to the west side of Atlanta."

With their car's location pinpointed Sonya and Anthony decided to take matters into their own hands with the encouragement of law enforcement.

Sonya recounted, "We notified the [police] officers and asked if we need to take matters into our own hands, and he shrugged and said we could."

Following the trail of their AirTags, the determined duo eventually traced the stolen vehicle to an apartment complex. The Find My app provided real-time updates, indicating that one of their AirTags was inside the apartment.

They wisely chose to wait for the police to arrive, but by the time law enforcement reached the scene, the AirTags had been disconnected.

It is believed that the suspects fled the scene due to the police's imminent arrival. Atlanta police have confirmed that they are actively investigating the incident, though they have not commented on the claim that an officer had encouraged the family to pursue the thieves.

The Dark Side of AirTag Tracking

While this case is a testament to the potential of AirTags to assist in locating stolen property, a different incident serves as a chilling reminder of the technology's risks.

In Bakersfield, California, a 61-year-old woman, Victoria Anna Marie Hampton, was tragically killed while attempting to recover her stolen vehicle using an AirTag.

Hampton's case serves as a stark reminder that while AirTags offer undeniable benefits, their usage should be sensible and cautious.

In this instance, Hampton attempted to track her stolen car without involving the authorities, which ultimately led to a fatal confrontation with the suspects. Four individuals have been arrested in connection with her tragic death.
