Microsoft continues its endeavor to attract top talent in the artificial intelligence (AI) space by hiring Mustafa Suleyman and Karen Simonyan, co-founders of the renowned AI startup, Inflection AI, along with several of their team members. 

With AI on the lead of the tech industry, the Redmond giant aims to even improve its AI-related services as 2024 moves. Clearly, the company is committed to competing with the top AI firms by hiring experienced people in the said field.

Inflection AI Co-Founders Join Microsoft's AI Division

To bolster its AI development this year, Microsoft hired two Inflection AI co-founders for its consumer AI division.

Mustafa Suleyman, a co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection AI, assumes the role of EVP and CEO of Microsoft AI, overseeing the newly formed consumer AI unit, Microsoft AI. 

Reporting directly to Nadella, Suleyman will also spearhead AI products and research for Copilot, Bing, and Edge. 

On the other hand, Karen Simonyan joins the company as the chief scientist in the same division, bringing her expertise to drive innovation and advancement in AI technologies.

From the get-go less than a year ago, Inflection spearheaded the $1.3 billion funding round which aims to establish more "personal" AI.

Inflection AI's Background and Transition

Founded in 2022 by Reid Hoffman and Mustafa Suleyman, Inflection AI gained prominence for its endeavors in developing AI systems capable of engaging in open-ended dialogue and assisting with various tasks. 

"Several members of the Inflection team have chosen to join Mustafa and Karén at Microsoft. They include some of the most accomplished AI engineers, researchers, and builders in the world. They have designed, led, launched, and co-authored many of the most important contributions in advancing AI over the last five years," Nadella wrote in a blog post.

With Microsoft's backing, Inflection AI is transitioning its focus to the AI studio business, concentrating on building and testing customer generative AI models. The company emphasizes its renewed focus on API development to empower creators globally.

Microsoft's AI Platform Expansion

According to TechCrunch, Microsoft's move to establish a dedicated consumer AI unit demonstrates its strategic vision in advancing AI capabilities. 

The company's commitment to innovation is evident as it hosts Inflection-2.5 on Microsoft Azure, with plans to extend its availability to other cloud platforms. This initiative aligns with Microsoft's goal to foster innovation and accessibility in AI technologies.

With the world still in the early stages of the AI platform shift, Nadella underscores the necessity for Microsoft to lead the charge in pioneering transformative AI solutions.

Microsoft's acquisition of talent from Inflection AI points out its dedication to advancing AI technologies and driving innovation in the consumer space. It is expected that it will hire more people who are well-versed with anything related to AI.

With Suleyman and Simonyan on the lead, Microsoft is poised to achieve significant milestones as the years go by.
