Dubai's Road and Transport Authority (RTA) is reportedly testing out AI robots by having them patrol the country's Jumeirah 3 Beach. The robot is set to detect violations along the beach with motion sensors and 4K cameras.

The robocop will use facial recognition technology and link it to an Emirates ID to fine anyone found in violation of Dubai's regulations governing electric scooters and bicycles.

This was made public on Thursday when the RTA started the smart robot's trial phase at the Jumeirah 3 beach region.

The robot, equipped with AI, is assigned to monitor the use of soft mobility devices, such as electric scooters and bicycles, by sharing, analyzing, and detecting infractions in conjunction with Dubai Police.

The director of RTA's Enterprise Command and Control Department, Hamad Alafeefi, listed the five major infractions: riding scooters and bicycles on walking tracks or in pedestrian-only zones; abandoning scooters in unapproved areas; riding scooters by multiple riders; and assembling crowds on cycle tracks. Penalties for these infractions can reach Dh300.

However, Alafeefi stated that since the robot will just record the images and information of these infractions and forward them to the authorities during the testing phase, no fines will be imposed during the 30-day trial period.

Alafeefi states that the trial period's main objectives will be to investigate the accuracy of AI detection and the caliber of data monitoring during the eight-hour operation period.

AI Robot's Testing Phase

The Chinese business Terminus created the autonomous robot inspector, which detects infractions with an 85% accuracy rate. To guarantee the security and safety of drivers, it may also issue announcements to the public and function in a variety of weather situations. 

During the trial phase, the robot will be available from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on weekends. After the testing period, the real operating phase will see the deployment of these robots in other areas, changing the operational hours once again. 

Global AI-Powered Robots

Globally, AI-powered robots continue to boom as numerous tech behemoths bet on the sector. Project GR00T, one of the centerpieces of NVIDIA's GTC 2024 presentation, was just revealed. The project aims to produce a basic model that will be applied to developing humanoid robots.

The company's Generalist Robot 00 Technology, or GR00T for short, will be built to mimic human gestures and comprehend natural language.

A recent update video for Figure 1, the robot driven by OpenAI, was also made available by the AI robotics startup Figure. In the two-and-a-half-minute video, the humanoid robot answers questions and demonstrates its ability to perform manual chores like handing an apple.

According to the video, Figure 1 responds to questions about what it sees by speaking about the thing on the table before it, showcasing the robot's advanced linguistic, visual, and natural language processing abilities.
