Amazon has finalized its $4 billion investment in Anthropic, with an additional $2.75 billion being infused into the artificial intelligence startup. This solidifies Amazon's stake in the San Francisco-based company.

Anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI, will continue to operate, with Amazon holding a minority ownership position.

Amazon and Anthropic's Partnership

Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of Data and AI at AWS, Amazon's cloud computing subsidiary, expressed optimism about collaborating with Anthropic, highlighting the potential of generative AI to revolutionize various industries.

"We have a notable history with Anthropic, together helping organizations of all sizes around the world to deploy advanced generative artificial intelligence applications across their organizations," Sivasubramanian said in a press release statement.

"Anthropic's visionary work with generative AI, most recently the introduction of its state-of-the art Claude 3 family of models, combined with Amazon's best-in-class infrastructure like AWS Tranium and managed services like Amazon Bedrock further unlocks exciting opportunities for customers to quickly, securely, and responsibly innovate with generative AI."

Amazon's initial investment of $1.25 billion in Anthropic last September paved the way for this expanded financial commitment. Amazon's long-term vision for Anthropic involves capitalizing on the transformative power of generative AI to drive innovation and customer-centric solutions.

Through a collaborative agreement, Anthropic will leverage Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its primary cloud provider for critical operations, including safety research and the development of future foundation models. Anthropic will utilize AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to build, train, and deploy its advanced AI models.
