BrainBridge, a startup led by Berlin-based molecular biologist Hashem Al-Ghaili, has announced plans to use robots to perform head transplant surgeries within the next decade. 

This ambitious project integrates advanced robotics and artificial intelligence to perform complex head and face transplantation procedures. The initiative targets severe medical conditions, including terminal illnesses, neurodegenerative diseases, paralysis, and many more.

When Is BrainBridge's First Surgery?

Al-Ghaili envisions an eight-year timeline for the first surgery. He believes this period will allow for the recruitment of top talent and the development of technologies necessary to overcome significant medical challenges, particularly spinal cord repair. 

BrainBridge's system is still in the conceptual phase. It is designed to use high-speed robotic systems to maintain the brain's condition during the transplant process. These robots are expected to handle the delicate task of precisely transplanting a head onto a compatible donor body. 

The system also aims to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance through face and scalp transplantation, utilizing younger donor tissues to minimize the risk of rejection and improve the patient's overall appearance.

BrainBridge Head Band

One notable aspect of BrainBridge's plan is the BrainBridge Head Band, a device equipped with a Brain-Computer Interface. This technology is intended to enable patients to communicate their needs during recovery, control devices, and perform tasks independently using their thoughts. The goal is to enhance patients' autonomy and quality of life following surgery.

BrainBridge's stated mission is to push the boundaries of human health and recovery by introducing transformative medical interventions. The startup aims to revolutionize transplant medicine through its head transplant system concept, which combines advanced robotics and artificial intelligence. 

The ultimate objective is to allow individuals suffering from severe medical conditions to lead fully functional lives in new, healthy bodies while preserving their cognitive skills, consciousness, and memories.

Beyond Surgery
