The major Windows 11 update for 2024, also known as Windows 11 24H2, is now available for preview. However, to fully experience its benefits, you'll need an unreleased Windows Copilot+ PC. This update, featuring Build 26100.712, is accessible through the Release Preview Channel.

Your full Windows experience won't be complete if you don't use Copilot+ PC soon. However, you can make the most out of it with the major Windows 11 update.

Wi-Fi 7 Support

Despite the availability of Wi-Fi 7 routers, Windows 11 has not officially supported this technology until now. Microsoft started testing Wi-Fi 7 compatibility in February with Build 26063, allowing for faster and more reliable wireless connections.

HDR Backgrounds

With Build 23516, Microsoft introduced support for HDR desktop backgrounds. This means high dynamic range images, such as a sunlit sky, will render more accurately on your screen, enhancing visual quality. According to PCWorld, this feature is distinct from AutoHDR, which is already present in Windows 11.

Voice Clarity

Microsoft announced AI-enhanced noise cancellation called "voice clarity" in January. This feature improves the ability of apps to filter out background noise and emphasize your voice, offering a clearer communication experience during calls and recordings.

Sudo for Windows

The "superuser do" (sudo) command is being incorporated into Windows, primarily for developers. This command allows users to override existing protections and execute commands with higher privileges, similar to its functionality in Unix-based systems.

Additional Enhancements

Several smaller but significant features are also part of this update:

  • 7-ZIP and TAR File Compression: Windows 11 will now natively support compressing files using 7-ZIP and TAR formats, expanding beyond the traditional ZIP format.

  • Scrollable Quick Settings: The taskbar's quick settings flyout will now have a scrollable view, making it easier to access all settings.

  • Improved Bluetooth Connectivity: Enhancements for Bluetooth low-energy devices will provide better connectivity and performance.

AI-Powered Features in the Windows 11 2024 Update

Microsoft's AI features showcased at the Build conference in Seattle are a major highlight of this update. These include:

  • Recall: An AI-driven smart search tool that helps find lost details by taking snapshots of your PC activities.

  • Microsoft Paint Cocreator: This tool leverages AI to assist users in creating and editing images.

  • Automatic Super Resolution: Enhances image quality using AI.

Unfortunately, these features require an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) found only in Copilot+ PCs, which will start shipping on June 18. These PCs will be equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chip, making them essential for accessing the full suite of AI capabilities.

How to Access the Windows 11 2024 Update

To try out the Windows 11 2024 Update now, you must be enrolled in the Windows Insider Program, specifically in the Release Preview Channel. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Windows Update.

  2. Select the optional Windows 11 24H2 update if it's available.

Future Availability and Regional Rollout

Microsoft plans to migrate Copilot to the Windows desktop as a standalone app. The first region to receive this feature will be the European Economic Area, including the European Union.

The Windows 11 2024 update brings game-changing advancements, from Wi-Fi 7 support and HDR backgrounds to groundbreaking AI features.

While some functionalities require specific hardware, the update overall enhances the user experience and prepares Windows 11 for future innovations.
