Say goodbye to blue links—Google's AI Mode delivers answers, not just results.

If you've noticed the little AI block at the top of your search results in Google, you're not alone. Now Google is taking it even further by integrating its Gemini AI right into search with AI Mode.

The mode is available now to all US Labs users (the experimental part of Google Search). It aims to let you ask more complex questions and receive more interesting results sourced from around the internet.

AI Mode departs from traditional search methods, leveraging artificial intelligence to provide detailed, nuanced responses instead of just a list of hyperlinks. Google offers AI-generated responses directly, using data from its extensive search index, including the Shopping Graph, which houses over 45 billion product descriptions.

When you engage with AI Mode, you'll have access to a more conversational tool rather than the typical keyword-based search, letting you ask open-ended queries that encourage exploration, says Google. AI Mode supports follow-up questions, too, helping you delve deeper into topics without restarting your entire search.

Central to AI Mode are new visual place and product cards, which include interactive elements that provide insights about products and locations. These cards list essentials such as ratings, reviews, and hours of operation, and they give real-time product availability in nearby stores. Users can tap these cards for more details or perform actions such as calling a location or obtaining directions.

For the test group, a distinct AI Mode tab appears within the main search interface, offering advanced search capabilities. The initial waitlist has been removed, granting any user in the US immediate access via Google Labs. Google is enriching this feature set with capabilities meant to assist in tasks like finding products and planning trips.

Director, Product Management, Search, Soufi Esmaeilzadeh wrote in a blog post:

Rolling out over the coming week, you'll begin to see visual place and product cards in AI Mode with the ability to tap to get more details. For local spots, like restaurants, salons and stores, you can quickly see info like ratings, reviews, and opening hours, and if you're looking for a product, you'll see shoppable options with real-time prices (including the latest promotions), images, shipping details and local inventory.

Google says that feedback has been positive, so much so that the company is starting a limited test outside of Labs. It won't be long, then, before we all start seeing an AI Mode tab in Search.

Still, it's not all roses, as publishers struggle with being seen by search users, AI continues to have a hallucination problem, and the environmental impact of all this AI use is still pretty bad.

Of course, we're all using AI for search, via Google or other apps like ChatGPT, because it does provide more expansive and comprehensive results. Google knows that and wants to keep us all safely in their own garden.
