Who Benefits, Who Remains Exposed, and What to Do Now
For a WhatsApp user who wants to ask Meta AI a medical question, discuss a legal situation, or explore a sensitive personal topic without that exchange being linked to their account or used to train a future model, Incognito Chat offers something genuinely new from a major AI provider. The architecture is designed so that Meta cannot read the conversation — a claim that, if the TEE implementation is sound, is qualitatively different from the retention-only protections offered by Google and OpenAI.
For users handling information that requires confidentiality strong enough to withstand a government subpoena or a corporate data breach, Incognito Chat is not that product. No cloud-based AI system is. Self-hosted models — such as running Ollama locally on your own hardware — remain the only option where queries never reach any external server.
The practical steps for any WhatsApp user today are concrete: update to the latest version of WhatsApp to access Incognito Chat when it reaches your region; separately, enable end-to-end encrypted backups in WhatsApp Settings to prevent your standard message history from sitting in plaintext on Apple or Google servers; and treat Meta AI's safety filters as guardrails with no external audit, not as a verified safety guarantee. The last of those is not a criticism unique to Meta — it applies to every major AI provider operating at scale in 2026.
Incognito Chat is a technically serious product from a company with a serious credibility problem. Those two things are both true, and neither cancels the other out.
