During the Google I/O 2026 event earlier this month, YouTube announced that it is giving a new update to its AI labelling tech as it can now automatically detect AI-generated content and put the appropriate labels on it.
Google previously announced its massive shift towards being fully focused on artificial intelligence across the products of the company. It seems that, despite this, it is offering users on YouTube a way to easily identify real content from AI-generated ones.
YouTube AI Labels Expands With New Features
YouTube announced in its latest blog post that it is now adding improvements to its AI labeling system on the platform. According to YouTube, they have heard the pleas of users on the platform about improvements, better detection tools, and an expanded labeling system.
Previously, YouTube focused on voluntary disclosures of AI-generated content on the platform, which involved asking creators to tick the option saying that their upload has a form of AI present within its content.
This requirement applies to both realistic and obvious AI-generated content as, back then, people were getting confused about what was real or not.
Automatic Detections, AI Labels
In this update, YouTube said that its systems can now automatically detect if a video has AI-generated content in it, and the platform will then label it properly on its own.
Alongside this, YouTube said that it is also simplifying the labels and moving them to more visible areas. For long-form videos, it will be directly under the video player and above the description. As for Shorts, the label will appear directly on top of the video as an overlay.
Creators who feel like YouTube mislabeled their video with AI may dispute this through the YouTube Studio to plead their case if it was incorrect.
Google's Massive AI Push
YouTube's AI labeling revamp is part of Google's plans to push more generative AI features on its many platforms and products, including new tools on the streaming platform.
YouTube is getting Google Omni, a new video generation and editing tool that will help creators to produce content easily using machine learning models.
With this, many AI-generated content will easily flood the platform and may leave many more frustrated as videos that are fully made with or may contain AI will flood the streaming platform.
