Pokémon buffs will be pleased to learn that they can soon play as Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The news comes straight from the horse's mouth – or rather, the ponyta's mouth – Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of the game.

Fans have anxiously awaited the long-promised release of the DLC for Mewtwo, the ultra-powerful psychic Pokémon. Sakurai said the Mewtwo DLC will come out "pretty soon," while speaking at an event in Japan.

Sakurai revealed that work on the DLC was "pretty much done" and fans just have to wait for an official announcement from Nintendo.

"So with regards to my announcement-ish announcement, it isn't anything to do with something new I'm working on; it's nothing like that," Sakurai said. "Rather, it's about the release of the Mewotwo DLC character, which we may have made the fans quite worried about."

Sakurai said the Mewtwo DLC for Super Smash Bros. will be released in the period it was "intended for," this spring. The addition of Mewtwo DLC will increase the cast of the popular Nintendo game for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. It currently features popular characters such as Pikachu, Luigi, Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Sonic and Pac-Man, among others.

Nintendo had confirmed that Mewtwo would be a playable character for Super Smash Bros back in October 2014. The company also announced at the time that owners of Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions would be eligible to download Mewtwo free of charge. Nintendo later stated that Mewtwo would be available as a paid DLC for individuals who only had a single copy of Super Smash Bros.

Considering Super Smash Bros. put Wii U into the reckoning, the release of the Mewtwo DLC will provide a definite boost to the sales of the multi-player game.
