There are plenty of returning fighters in Mortal Kombat X — it just wouldn't feel like a proper Mortal Kombat game without characters like Sub-Zero, Raiden and Scorpion.

That said, there are plenty of new characters in the game, too — some have ties to classic characters, others are completely new. The only problem is that fans haven't gotten to see much of them — outside of a few short trailers, gamers have yet to see what these new fighters can really do.

That's where the Mortal Kombat X comic comes in. While fans might not have the game quite yet, the comics serve as the true introduction to the new characters. Trailers only offer a glimpse, but the comic has had plenty of time to really show off the new fighters. The series is still ongoing, and is written by Shawn Kittelsen with art by Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini, and Igor Vitorino.

So, if you're worried about going into the game blind, fear not: here's everything you need to know about Mortal Kombat X's new fighters.

Takeda Takahashi

He may be Kenshi's son, but Takeda looks up to Scorpion as his true father. As one of the last two surviving Shirai Ryu warriors, Takeda is set on helping his master restore the Kamidogu daggers and prevent the evil Elder God Shinnok from escaping.

Cassie Cage

What happens when you mix an overly arrogant movie star and an ice-cold soldier? You get Cassie Cage: a brash, talented fighter who spends more time trying to escape her mother's clutches than anything else. Not to mention that she almost inadvertently started a war between Earthrealm and Outworld... oops.

Jacqui Briggs

The daughter of the late Jax Briggs, Jacqui Briggs is Cassie Cage's best friend (and sometimes accomplice). She might not have the bulky robotic arms of her father, but that doesn't make Jacqui any less capable of a fighter — when she's not being kidnapped and taken hostage by otherworldly soldiers, that is.

Kotal Kahn

Shao Kahn tried to destroy the realms, but Kotal Kahn seeks to bring them together — peacefully. Of course, that's easier said than done when Mileena is leading the other side of a Civil War and Earthrealm wants nothing to do with him. Kotal Kahn is a warrior through and through, but also a benevolent leader... for now, at least.

D'Vorah

The queen of insects also serves as one of Kotal Kahn's trusted advisers — but D'Vorah isn't there just for the sake of politics: she's an extremely capable warrior and bodyguard, too. While she may not trust a single Earthrealm emissary, she'd gladly give her life for Kotal Kahn or any other of his warriors.

Erron Black

Every story needs a calm, stoic cowboy gunslinger — and in Mortal Kombat X, that's Erron Black. While he may have crossed a line when he abducted Cassie Cage and Jacqui Briggs, he remains one of Kotal Kahn's servants — for now, at least. Last we saw, Erron was stuck in one of the emperor's prisons....

Ferra & Torr

While the hulking Ferra and Torr haven't seen much in the way of screentime so far, the pair still make one of the strongest assets in Kotal Kahn's armies. While they initally appeared as part of a sneak attack coordinated by Reptile, Ferra and Torr were present when D'Vorah tried to negotiate with Mileena's forces. As you might expect, it didn't go well.

Kung Jin

As it stands, Kung Jin is the only new character who has yet to appear in the Mortal Kombat X comic. That said, fans shouldn't expect that to last for long, as Kung Jin's comic book debut is all but guaranteed.

Mortal Kombat X is out now, but the comic has been running for the past few months. The first volume, titled "Blood Ties," is available now on Comixology and other bookstores. For fans of the game, it's a must-buy.

Mortal Kombat X (the game) is set for release today, April 14.
