Why is today, April 30, Free Cone Day at Carvel? Why do any unofficial holidays exist? The world may never know.

I'm certainly not complaining, and I gather you aren't either. Well, heads may roll if you don't get your free cone, of course, but here's how to prevent that from happening.

Participating Carvel locations are giving away free junior cones to customers from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today only. You can fill that cone with either vanilla, chocolate or Carvel's limited-edition Nutella flavor.

Hopefully, you've finally recovered from your Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day extravaganza on April 14 in order to properly enjoy your free cone at Carvel. With all of the ice cream you've been eating lately, it feels like summer is already upon us, doesn't it?

While free ice cream always deserves its own day, Carvel's Free Cone Day has a greater purpose than just handing out some complimentary soft serve to customers. That's hard to believe, I know. Customers will also be encouraged to help raise money for the American Red Cross by purchasing a coupon book for $2, which contains more than $20 worth of savings. All proceeds from the sale of the coupon books will go toward a $20,000 donation to the organization.

Free ice cream and supporting a worthy cause? Now that's pretty sweet.
