As a series about time travel, Doctor Who isn't a show that has a problem with bringing the dead back to life. We've seen many long-dead characters throughout the run of the series, including historical figures, as well as characters who died on the show.

Even the Doctor himself regenerates instead of dying, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that the series is bringing back one popular character that died in one of last season's episodes.

Please note that the following contains a small spoiler for the next season of Doctor Who. If you don't want to know who this character is, please stop reading now.

Okay, are you ready?

Doctor Who is bringing back the Fourth Doctor-scarf wearing UNIT scientist and asthma-sufferer, Osgood.

Osgood, portrayed by actress Ingrid Oliver, died last season at the hands of Missy, in what many fans consider a very cruel death. The character was always popular with Whovians, perhaps because she was also a fan of the Doctor and even sported apparel associated with his previous incarnations.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat even confirmed Osgood's death, but that's a funny thing when you're doing a show about time travel, right?

"Osgood is back, fresh from her recent murder at the end of last series," says Moffat. "We recently confirmed that Osgood was definitely dead and not returning - but in a show about time travel, anything can happen. The brilliant Ingrid Oliver is back in action. This time though, can the Doctor trust his number one fan?"

Of course, Oliver expressed excitement over bringing Osgood back to life on the series.

"As every actor who's worked on Doctor Who will tell you, there's always the secret hope you'll get the call asking you to come back," says Oliver. "To actually receive that call is both unexpected and brilliant. The word 'honor' gets banded about a lot, but it really is, it's an honor."

There's more news, though, concerning the return of Osgood. She'll be battling her foes from "The Day of the Doctor," the Zygons, aliens who can shapeshift into pretty much anything and anyone they want. Also returning in the episode is UNIT science head Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, played by Jemma Redgrave.

This news comes after we've learned that Michelle Gomez, who portrays Missy, also returns to Doctor Who next season: she disappeared at the end of her last episode, presumably dead (although most fans thought not).
